Why Something is Preferred in Business or Life

Preference

A preference of a person means liking and choosing something more than other things presented at a time to the person. It is often very subjective but could and should be objective as far as possible.

For every step in life, we have multiple options to choose from. What we choose depends on our mental orientation at that particular instant of choosing. Since, our options mold our future and pattern of life, it is important to make a right decision at every step in life. This is a highly intellectual exercise and often bypassed by our general tendencies of making preferences.

There are two possible ways of making a choice - convenience-based and benefit-based. What base is chosen by a person often depends on the person's lifestyle. Some persons don't like to take much trouble and prefer at being comfortable even foregoing possible greater benefits if they choose to venture out of their respective comfort zones. There are some others who go for higher benefits even at the price of discomforts to them. This category of persons are often entrepreneurs, pioneers, adventurers, etc. Although each of us wishes to have high benefits but only a few venture out. This makes adventurers always in a minority while the majority is composed of those preferring to live in their comfort zones.

Directly Realized Effect

Our general tendency is to long for being a winner, hence do what provides us this feeling. This feeling comes when we find a direct effect of what we do. For example, a content website displaying results of a freelancer's work to him/her directly on his/her dashboard is preferred over another not displaying the results, even when the former provides less benefits than the latter.

Such a preference is further reinforced when the effect is displayed at the earliest. Psychologically, each of us dislikes waiting for its being considered as the result of mismanagement, although it is not always so. Processes take time to produce results. Another reason for preferring an early result is that human psyche sees future with fears of uncertainties. A famous proverb says, 'It is better to get one bird instead of looking for two in the bush', which is a true reflection of human mind. .

Independence

A website allows self-publication of articles by authors and later reviews them to keep or discard. Another website accepts articles, reviews them and then publishes them. Although, ultimate results of performances of both the websites are the same, authors prefer the former website for writing on for realizing instant results. This, they feel, provides them independence of producing results by themselves instead of depending on someone else for the result. Thus, independence of the performer is another positive factor for making a preference.

Friendly Interface

Everyone likes good friends and to be friendly in return, provided there are no negative experiences with someone particular to make him/her an enemy or causing an isolation from him/her. This friendliness originates from the social civilization of humanity, therefore, is always a desired thing for making a preference. Conversely, an environment of enmity and of doubt repels a person from getting associated.

Here it is important that in friendliness, experiences of the person him/herself matter, as all such experiences are of highly subjective nature. Therefore, going by some one else's experiences is not advisable but to have a direct feel of the environment is desirable for making a preference.

Serious versus Casual Approach

A good way to be happy is to be serious in business affairs to make goodness out of it and being casual and light-hearted with non-business affairs to recreate and entertain oneself. By being easy-going on trivial issues, one can be serious on business affairs without a boredom of continuous seriousness. This is what may be called a good management of life.

Seriousness is a contagious attribute meaning thereby that seriousness induces seriousness in those in the dealings. Those who manage their respective businesses with all the seriousness attract more persons for doing business with them. Conversely, a casual and careless approach repels others from the business. Therefore, for being preferred by others, one should be serious in his/her business affairs to take the best possible care of everyone coming to deal with.
