Gift of different Religions to Indian Psyche

Concept of God and his carrier religions have different influences on different societies depending on which god they conceptualize and basic tenets of their respective religions. Indian majority follows Hinduism but Islamic and Christian followers are also in good numbers in all locations of the large country. Since, the Muslims and Christians in the country are mostly converts from Hindus for different reasons, they too inherit the same characteristics as the Hindu majority. Therefore, what I talk here is not limited to Hindus but to all Indians.

Another reason for this similarity of characteristics in-spite of different religious leanings is the culture of the country which is always different from religion, and is often common to people of a geographical location and historical derivations.

Indian Gods and Goddesses

Indians worship a huge number of gods and goddesses for historical reasons. All these gods and goddesses were real persons of Theo race with some great qualities, who were working for development of the region and were very popular among people. About 2400 years back, when some wild races captured political power of the region, they gave to the people the concept of god and religion to dehumanize, demoralize and terrorize them as compared to an imaginary super-power called the god. After taking over the reigns of power, they named the great developers of the country as imaginary gods and goddesses to wipe out from the minds of the people their real contributions to the region.

Simultaneously, with the projection of Theos as imaginary gods and goddesses, the authorities then projected a new person as the real incarnation of god. His name was Krishna and was real enemy of Theos and had worked to wipe them out from the land and people's minds.

Historical Background

People become what they worship and appreciate. With Krishna as the God in real life, people became what he himself was in his conduct and character. The most important job of Krishna was to engineer a war called ‘Mahabharat’ to capture power from Theos on the plea of share in the empire for illegitimate sons of Cunty the Pratha, called Pandavas.

Theos, who had been decimated except a few, had brought Aryans to the land for their recovery and fight in the war. Krishna with the help of Alexander, won the war but did not handover the reigns of power to Pandavas but to his own kin Mahapadmanand. Pandavas were advised to go to Himalayas to get perished. This is the greatest lesson of immorality, Indians learned from Krishna – use someone for own benefits and then ditch him/her. Here are some more glimpses of Krishna’s impact on people’s psyche.

Another projected lord of the people in India is Rama, having a highly moral character. Following him is very difficult and inconvenient to the people particularly when a more convenient option is available to them. Krishna has been a more popular Lord of the people after Theos were uprooted from the land.

Hypocrisy

Trying to pose what a person is not in reality is hypocrisy. In real terms, it means keeping differences in thoughts, words and actions. Politicians use it under a different name ‘diplomacy’ and all religious-minded persons, particularly in India use it at least while going to temple. This becomes evident by their conducts at the next moment after their visit to the temple. A highly religion-oriented Go-fearing moralist suddenly turns into a professional businessperson forgetting his/her words to the God statue in the temple and some times eager to cut throat of every person coming in contact with him.

This trait in Indians’ character is inculcated by their faith in their Lord who fought war for getting a share in the Empire for Pandavas and on winning the war, advised them to go to Himalayas to get perished. Since, the incarnation of God did it, there is nothing wrong if the worshippers too do it.

Manipulative Attitude

In the known Mahabharat story, the so-called Lord had been shown manipulating each and every character coming in his contact to serve his own ends – to involve everyone in the war for getting them killed. He asks Arjun to fight war because of his religion as a kshatriya, but does not ask Dronacharya, a Brihmin, to keep away from the battle-field as participation in war was not the religion of a Brahmin.

The devotees of this God in India say what serves their purpose the best possible way irrespective of what the reality is. Such manipulations are applied on weaker person only while the strong are left out for their fear.

Mindlessness

Having faith clearly means go on believing without testing truthfulness of that the faith is about. This debars even common logic being applied through application of commonsense. For such a faith in Gods and religious preachers, Indians keep on believing totally illogical stories and tolerate every nonsense under cover of their faith in god and divine miracles.

Fanaticism

Self-righteousness without bothering for others’ views is fanaticism, and all religions and religious preachers preach this negative attitude to their followers, directly or indirectly. For this reason, there have been great wars and bloodsheds of the innocents on this account all over the globe.

Any religious preacher or follower hardly talks of superiority of own faith but of inferiority of others’ faiths, to spread hatred in the society. This has been going in India for centuries between Hindus, Muslims and Christians – the three important religions followed by Indians. There have been bloodsheds in different parts of the country at different times. A Hindi film ‘Gadar’ deals with theme in a powerful way.

Material Exchange

Wealth is created through agriculture, mining and industrialization. India is backward in all three fields and there are numerous exchanges of the same thing in between hands without creating anything new. Through such exchanges of materials from one hand to another, prices go on rising at every step resulting in to a very high price for the actual user. For this reason, trading is a more popular business in India than manufacturing.

This attitude of people has been developed for their focus on results rather than the means and easy-going lifestyles as learned from religious preachers who form the riches community of the country.

Overpopulation

For any ruler to be successful in ruling, popular support from people is essential. This is more true for democracy than other system of ruling people. Since, India has been made a religion-oriented country, here the society remains divided on religious lines and even the rulers have been religion oriented here. Such rulers have been wanting a high population ration of followers of their own religion. This resulted into a rapid rise in Islamic population in the country.

This trend of increasing population of own religion followers is highly active in democratic India where each community, particularly the minority communities, is gearing itself of achieving a higher population ration of the self to have more votes and elect a government of the own community.

Attitude of Dependence and Irresponsibility

Indians, in general, feel uncomfortable when made independent and accountable loaded with a responsibility. This is because of their being under foreign rules for thousands of years. For this reason, Indians always want to work under some one else instead to taking responsibility and working independently. This I call their slave mentality. Indians working for others are dong wonderfully well but they fail when working on their own. Although circumstances are also a factor to this, but their own mentality is the major factor.

Thus, religions and concept of God have devastating influence of psyche of Indians and damaged them to live at sub-human level of mindlessness.

Tolerance

Particularly Hinduism and generally all other religions teach to their followers tolerance, making them cowards and tolerant to even injustice by anti-social elements. As a result, India has been ruled for centuries by foreign invaders coming here as traders, asylum seekers, etc. and then becoming rulers here to exploit tolerance of the people. People of India have seldom revolted against injustice by rulers – foreign or local, under intoxicating influences of religions and becoming tolerant to all sorts of exploitation of themselves. Even today, in free India, the rulers are corrupt, dishonest, inefficient and manipulative, and these are being happily tolerated by the people.

Indian culture is so varied and it has such depth and will remain so if politicians stay away from making religion their crutch for securing votes.
